In the Footsteps of the Romans

Discover the beautiful countryside surrounding Cratfield with this 3.5 mile circular walk, starting and finishing at Cratfield Village Hall. The accompanying leaflet includes two scenic walks which can be enjoyed individually or combined for a longer adventure.

This part of Suffolk is renowned for its historic village greens, the remnants of medieval common land once used for grazing livestock and collecting fuel. Although most were enclosed by Parliamentary Act during the mid-19th century, Cratfield originally had six recorded greens.

The walk passes through the sites of three of these historic greens:

  • Silverleys Green - now remembered only in the name of a neighbouring property.
  • Swan Green - also preserved in local property names.
  • Goostead Green - now completely lost, surviving only on historic maps.

This is an excellent opportunity to explore Cratfield's rich landscape and discover a fascinating part of the village's history.
